WHAT
IS THE LONE SAILOR® STATUE PROJECT?
A proposal to place The Lone Sailor statue memorial on the Bremerton, Washington waterfront is presented by the Navy League of the United States, Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Council. Under the leadership of Council President Stan Mack, along with Project Co-Chairmen, Ron Testa and Tim Thomson, this active Navy League Council is raising funds to donate this patriotic statue to honor the Sea Service members of our communities in the Northwest ...past …present …and future. The Bremerton Harbor provides an excellent location for this statue. Currently, the revitalization of downtown Bremerton includes its Marina, which is expected to be completed in early 2008.
The
statue would be placed about 45’ from the SW end of the new Breakwater pier
(closest to the ferry side), centered on the 25’ wide breakwater.
A “placeholder” is already planned there for statuary and this
location provides for maximum waterside viewing while still accessible from land
on a public pier.
The
Lone Sailor statue would be a star attraction in the already existing
constellation of the historic ship USS Turner Joy (DD951) and the Shipyard
Workers memorial located at the marina, along with the newly relocated and
expanded Naval Memorial Museum of the Pacific (Bremerton Navy Museum) under
construction to the west of the ferry terminal. The Lone Sailor should be
clearly visible by all vessels transiting Sinclair inlet, to include warships in
and out of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard; Washington State and local ferries; and
pleasure craft frequenting the marina. Families can gather at the statue to bid
aloha to loved ones aboard these vessels.
FUNDRAISING
AND DEDICATION:
Our
goal is to raise $300,000 to complete this project. $200,000 is needed to
purchase the statue from the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation. The additional
$100,000 would be for site development, fundraising costs, and a proper
dedication ceremony.
